A timeshare, in other words, can be referred to as a vacation ownership. It is a term that initially started in the United Kingdom at the start of 1960 and enlarged in the vocational systems that became very popular after the Second World War. Timeshare means that a property is divided in the form of ownership. For example, when many parties or people buy a timeshare property, each party is allocated the ownership of the timeshare property purchased and given a specific period to use the timeshare.


The vacation system used in the United Kingdom involved holiday home sharing where about four families in Europe would buy many holiday properties jointly, and each family would have an exclusive use of the items during the seasons. Mostly the families divided themselves according to the number of the four seasons that were spent where each family would use one timeshare per season. However, since this ownership required a lot of trust among the families, vacation home sharing properties were mostly purchased by families that were very carefully related to each other, and no one in any of the families was required to be in charge of the properties purchased. After becoming popular in the European nations, people in other continents around the world started adopting timeshares. The United States followed after the United Kingdom. In 1973, the Virgin Islands properties began offering their timeshares. Later on, in 1974 Caribbean International Corporation (CIC) whose headquarters were based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida also began selling their timeshares. Other than offering a vacation or holiday ownership, CIC offered vacation licenses to its customers, and this generated a lot of profits to the corporation. On 17th May 2010, the ministry of economy in Mexico established some new rule and regulations that timeshare providers were required to follow and adhere to.  The department established these rules and guidelines through the General Directorate of Standards. Some of the providers of timeshares included various institutions in the country. For example, Mexican Resort Development Association and National Fund for Tourism in Mexico.


There various methods of using timeshare but this depends on how the owner intends to use his or her timeshare. Owners can use their timeshares for their reasons and benefits, they can also give their timeshare property ownerships as gifts to other people, and they can as well sell their vacation ownership and licenses to other people. Timeshare owners also have a right to exchange their timeshares without needing any formal or legal agreement with the companies or corporations offering the timeshares.
